Co-op says cyber attack costs at least £206m in sales; H1 2025 results show £75m pre-tax loss

The Co-op said a cyber attack in April cost it at least £206 million in lost revenues, as the retailer reported a weaker first half for 2025. Management said its IT networks were infiltrated, triggering payment problems, widespread shortages of goods in stores and the loss of customer data.

Co-op chair Debbie White called the attack malicious and said it had caused significant challenges in the first half of 2025. She added that the group must now rebuild to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Financially, the six months to July 5 showed an underlying pre-tax loss of £75 million, versus a £3 million profit for the same period a year earlier. The group cautioned that the full cost of the incident could be higher, noting it also expects some impact to its business in the second half of the year.

Management said the incident would prompt a rebuilding effort focused on strengthening cyber defenses and resilience as part of the plan to recover from the attack. Officials did not provide a fixed timeline for recovery, but warned that the second half of 2025 could reflect the fallout from the April incident.
