Costco recalls Kirkland Signature Prosecco over potential bottle shattering
Recall covers bottles sold in 13 states; unopened bottles could shatter even when not handled; refunds offered to customers with recall letters

Costco is recalling Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after a risk that bottles could shatter without warning, the retailer announced on its website. The recall covers bottles purchased between April 25 and August 26 and sold in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Costco said unopened bottles can shatter even when not in use or being handled. The company advised customers who have unopened bottles to wrap them in paper towels and place them in a plastic bag before disposing of them to prevent injury from shattered glass. Costco did not disclose how many bottles were affected or how it identified the issue. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
Costco said it is sending letters to impacted customers and will provide a full refund if those letters are presented at a Costco store. The recall was reported after the company’s inquiry with regulators and importers, with The Associated Press seeking comment from Ethica Wines, the Miami-based company that imported the affected wines from Italy.
As of the notice, Costco said there were no reported injuries related to the issue. The recall affects Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene imported from Italy and distributed in the listed states, underscoring the importance of proper disposal and reimbursement procedures for customers who purchased the product.
Ethica Wines, the importer referenced in the recall, is identified in connection with the affected lot, though Costco did not disclose the total number of affected bottles or the specific distribution details beyond the states listed. Consumers who have questions or who hold the recall letters are advised to contact Costco customer service or visit their nearest store for guidance on refunds and eligibility.
