Ford recalls more than 115,000 Super Duty pickups over steering-defect risk

Ford is recalling 115,539 Super Duty pickups built for 2020 and 2021 due to a steering-column defect that could lead to a loss of steering control, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday. The recall covers certain F-250, F-350 and F-450 models, and Ford has identified the recall as 25S94.

The defect involves the steering column’s upper shaft detaching, which could cause a driver to lose steering while operating the vehicle. Ford dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and repair or replace the faulty component free of charge to owners. Owners are expected to receive recall notices by mail beginning Oct. 6, with additional letters to follow once a final remedy is available, which is anticipated in December 2025. VINs for vehicles in the recall are searchable on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

The recall comes on the heels of Ford’s broader safety slate in recent months. Earlier this year, Ford said it was recalling about 1.9 million vehicles globally because of defective rearview cameras that may display inverted, distorted or blank images. In August, NHTSA announced that more than 355,000 Ford trucks sold in the United States were being recalled for issues with a dashboard display that could impair visibility of critical information while driving.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact Ford or their local dealership for inspection scheduling and to arrange repairs, which will be performed at no cost. The recall underscores a continuing safety risk profile for the automaker as it works to address multiple fault conditions across its SUV and truck lineup. Depending on the market and production date, certain VINs in the recall window may be included or excluded, so verification via NHTSA’s site is advised.

As Ford implements the recall, customers who rely on the affected trucks for work or daily transportation may face temporary service interruptions while parts are sourced and repairs are completed. Ford has not indicated any incidents of crashes or injuries related to this steering-column defect at the time of the recall notice, but regulators emphasize the potential seriousness of steering loss.

For the latest information, motorists should keep an eye out for official notices and check NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool to confirm whether their vehicle is included in the recall. The company’s internal recall code for this action is 25S94, and the matter remains a priority for federal safety regulators as they monitor the repair timeline and remedy rollout.

The recall notice also aligns with a broader trend in which manufacturers face multi-vehicle recalls tied to component failures that could affect core driving safety functions. While Ford has provided a clear path for inspection and repair, owners should respond promptly to recall notices and arrange service at an authorized dealer to ensure the issue is addressed before the vehicle is used extensively.
