Ford recalls nearly 1.5 million U.S. vehicles over rear‑view camera problem

Ford is recalling almost 1.5 million vehicles in the United States after the company reported that rear‑view camera images can appear blank or distorted on the center display while a vehicle is in reverse, potentially reducing or distorting a driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers certain 2015 through 2019 model year vehicles including the Lincoln Navigator and MKC, Mustang, Ranger, Transit and Transit Connect, Econoline, Edge, Expedition and several Super Duty models (F‑250 SD, F‑350 SD, F‑450 SD and F‑550 SD), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in its safety recall report Monday.

In the agency filing, NHTSA said Ford is aware of 18 crashes connected to the camera issue and reported no injuries. The defect can cause the center display screen to show a blank image or a distorted image when the vehicle is placed in reverse, the report said.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for inspection and replacement of the rear‑view camera module if necessary. The remedy will be performed free of charge, the report said.

The recall notice filed with NHTSA did not include an estimated schedule for owner notification. Dealers will inspect the camera module and replace it when the symptom is present or update components as needed to restore normal display function.

Rear‑view cameras became widespread following a federal requirement that took effect in 2018 that mandated backup camera systems on most new passenger vehicles to improve visibility and reduce backover crashes. The vehicles covered in this recall span model years before and after that mandate, and Ford’s recall addresses specific hardware or display failures that can defeat the system.

Ford has issued numerous recalls over the years for a range of issues; this action adds to the company’s ongoing safety‑related notices but is limited to instances where the camera image fails to provide a usable view. NHTSA will track the remedy and any additional reports as the recall is carried out.

Affected owners with questions can contact Ford customer service or check the NHTSA recall database with their vehicle identification number for more information.
