Porsche halts factory orders for 718 Boxster and Cayman ahead of electric replacements

Porsche has stopped accepting new factory orders for its 718 Boxster roadster and Cayman coupe as the company prepares to replace the internal-combustion models with battery-powered successors, the automaker's UK configurator and dealer guidance indicate.

Porsche UK’s online configurator states it is “no longer possible to place new factory orders” for either model, and customers are being directed to franchised dealers to purchase remaining new-stock examples. Porsche has said the electric replacements will be unveiled this year or early next year, with production due to commence imminently.

Introduced in 1996, the mid-engined Boxster established itself as a lower-cost entry point into Porsche ownership and has commonly been referred to as the brand’s “poor man’s Porsche.” The coupe sibling, the Cayman, joined the line-up in 2005. Both models have been central to Porsche’s contemporary portfolio and have been widely credited with helping the company recover from financial difficulties in the 1990s.

Porsche has been transitioning its product range to electrified drivetrains as part of a broader industry shift toward battery-electric vehicles. The incoming 718 successors are expected to be fully electric and positioned at a higher price point than the gasoline-powered roadster and coupe they replace, according to the company’s public statements about its electrification strategy.

Customers seeking immediate deliveries are being steered toward dealer stock, where remaining new examples of the Boxster and Cayman may still be available. Porsche’s factory-order halt signals the end of new-build internal-combustion variants and clears the way for the start of electric production and sales.

The move follows increasing investment across the Volkswagen Group, Porsche’s parent, in battery technology, electric platforms and manufacturing capacity. Porsche has previously outlined plans to broaden its electric lineup while continuing to sell hybrids and conventional engines during a transition period.

Analysts and industry observers have cited the Boxster and Cayman series as important volume contributors that helped expand Porsche’s customer base below the flagship 911. The discontinuation of internal-combustion 718 models marks a notable step in Porsche’s product repositioning as it prepares to launch a new generation of electrified sports cars.

Porsche has not released detailed pricing or option lists for the forthcoming electric 718 replacements. The automaker’s public schedule indicates unveilings later this year or in early 2026, with production set to begin shortly after those introductions. In the meantime, prospective buyers seeking a new 718 roadster or coupe are advised to contact franchised dealers to determine availability of remaining gasoline-powered stock.
