Tesla’s EU sales slump as BYD overtakes amid rising EV demand
August EU sales drop for Tesla; BYD surges as overall European EV demand climbs, with Musk-related headwinds cited as contributing factors

Tesla’s European Union sales fell 37% in August to 8,220 vehicles, as Chinese rival BYD nearly tripled its EU sales to more than 9,000 in the month.
Year to date, Tesla has sold 85,673 cars in the EU, down 43% from a year earlier, even as demand for electric cars in Europe rose about 30% in August and 25% for the year to date. The results illustrate a market where overall EV interest is rising while Tesla’s share is shrinking amid growing competition.
Analysts cited intensified competition from BYD and a boycott against Musk as headwinds in Europe. BYD’s EU sales more than doubled to surpass 9,000 in August, while Tesla’s monthly tally remained far below its higher-water marks of earlier years. The report also notes Musk’s past ties to Donald Trump’s administration, which pursued large cuts in U.S. spending and policy shifts that sparked protests against Tesla, including showroom incidents.
Musk has since fallen out with Trump and left the U.S. administration, but that pivot has not yet translated into a rebound in European demand. In Europe, buyers have shown resilience in adopting electric vehicles even as competition intensifies, a dynamic that is reshaping the region’s EV landscape.
The August results come as industry observers caution that further data will be needed to understand how quickly automakers can scale in Europe’s evolving EV market. The figures highlight a year of rapid change for Tesla in the region, with BYD’s rise signaling a broader challenge to the company’s dominance there.

As the market continues to shift, analysts will be watching for new data on pricing strategies, incentives, and supply dynamics that could influence whether Tesla can regain momentum in Europe.
