Bloodthirsty squirrel terrorizes California neighborhood, sending 2 to ER: 'She almost killed me'

A bloodthirsty squirrel attacked residents in Lucas Valley, a California neighborhood north of San Francisco, sending at least two people to the emergency department and prompting warnings from neighbors. The animal has attacked at least five residents since last week, according to ABC7, which cited witnesses in the Bay Area suburb. Isabel Campoy described the incident to the station as the squirrel leaping from the floor and attempting to reach her face. Campoy said she was left with bruising and deep forearm wounds that required hospital treatment.

Another early victim, elderly neighbor Joan Heblack, said the animal suddenly ran up and clamped onto her leg, with the tail whipping around as she tried to shake it off. She described the moment as terrifying and said she was forced to call for help.

Neighbors circulated a flyer warning others about the aggressive animal, including a sign that reads Attack squirrel beware!!!!!!!! This is not a joke. The flyer has been posted by residents in the area to deter further encounters and to remind the public to stay cautious near yard space and wooded patches where the animal has been seen.

Vanessa Potter, director of WildCare in San Rafael, said the behavior could indicate territoriality or that the squirrel was previously cared for by people. She noted that if the animal associates people with food, it may lose its natural wariness and become bolder in seeking sustenance from humans.

As of Monday, there has been no sign of the squirrel in the past several days, and residents remain frightened. ABC7 reported no recent sightings and said authorities were monitoring the situation while community members weighed safety precautions.

The sequence of events in Lucas Valley underscores the ongoing tension between suburban life and wildlife, especially when animals become habituated to people. Officials have not released further details about the animal’s origin or any official capture efforts, and residents are hopeful the threat has passed.
