Chastain slams Apple as The Savant release is paused after Charlie Kirk assassination

Apple TV+ has postponed the release of Jessica Chastain’s thriller The Savant after the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, the streaming service and the star said. In an Instagram note on Wednesday, the Oscar winner said she values her partnership with Apple but that she and the company are not aligned on pausing the release of the series. "They’ve been incredible collaborators and I deeply respect their team. That said, we’re not aligned on the decision to pause the release of The Savant," Chastain wrote.

In the post, Chastain also framed the pause in a broader national context, listing a string of violent incidents over the past several years and arguing that the show’s central premise — following heroes who intervene to stop violence before it happens — has become more urgent than ever. She cited events from kidnappings and political violence to mass shootings and the assassination attempt against a sitting public figure, saying, "These incidents illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted. I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects... The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever."

Apple TV+ announced the decision to delay The Savant on Tuesday, saying, "After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date." The plan had called for the first two episodes to premiere Friday, Sept. 26, with the remaining six episodes released weekly. The Apple TV+ app now displays the limited series as "coming at a later date."

The show is described by Apple as a tense, high-stakes thriller that follows an undercover investigator known as "The Savant" as she infiltrates online hate groups to stop domestic extremists before they act. Melissa James Gibson created the series, which is based on Andrea Stanley’s 2019 Cosmopolitan story titled "Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?" The cast includes Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin / The Savant, alongside Nnamdi Asomugha, Pablo Schreiber, Cole Doman, Dagmara Domińczyk, James Badge Dale, Jordana Spiro, Trinity Lee Shirley, Toussaint Francois Battiste and Michael Mosley.

During an interview with RadioTimes published this week, Chastain acknowledged that the series resonates with real-world events. "I hate that this show is relevant. I hate that there are mass acts of violence. But maybe through this conversation and through unearthing this darkness in society, we’re gonna work together to fix it," she said. "I’m always going to navigate from a place of hope because I do think that at our core, humanity and people are good. The ones who aren’t are the ones who make the loudest noise. But there’s more power in goodness."

Chastain also noted that filming The Savant left her feeling more hopeful about the very issues the show raises, even as she acknowledged the current climate around violence. "But I always choose to live from a place of hope," she said. "And the ones who aren’t are the ones who make the loudest noise. But there’s more power in goodness."

The pause comes amid a high-profile incident tied to the broader debates the series touches on. Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder, was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10; a 22-year-old, Tyler Robinson, has been charged in connection with the shooting. The timing of the pause has intensified questions about the relationship between entertainment that examines political violence and real-world events.

Apple declined further comment beyond its release statement, and representatives for Chastain did not respond to requests for additional detail. The Post reported that the actress publicly signaled a desire to continue the project when the time is right, emphasizing a belief in sparking conversation and safeguarding audiences through storytelling.

The Savant represents a collaboration among Gibson as showrunner and a broader creative team, with a premise that aligns with public-interest discussions about preventing mass violence. Though the release is on hold, Apple’s stated goal is to bring the series to audiences at a later date, allowing the production team to weather the pause and continue refining the project.

The decision underscores how cultural products that tackle violent extremism can become entangled with real-world events and public safety debates. Industry observers say delayed releases are not uncommon when studios weigh the potential impact of a show’s timing, especially one that mirrors recent or ongoing events in the political and social landscape.

In Chastain’s view, the show’s central message remains relevant and important. She told RadioTimes that despite the current stakes, her commitment to the project endures and that she will share updates if and when a new release window is identified.
