Elaine Hendrix hints at Superstar sequel with Molly Shannon as DWTS chatter grows

Elaine Hendrix says a potential 'Superstar' sequel could be possible, telling The Post during week two of Dancing With the Stars that fans shouldn’t overlook the idea. The 1999 comedy hit theaters 26 years ago, and Hendrix, now 54, did not rule out revisiting the story.

On the film’s premise, the 1999 comedy follows an awkward Roman Catholic high-school student Mary Katherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) who dreams of dating Sky Corrigan (Will Ferrell) and becoming a star. Hendrix played the popular head cheerleader Evian. Asked who she still keeps in touch with from the original cast, Hendrix said, 'Molly.' 'Molly mostly,' she added, noting that 'you end up running into other people a lot.' She also said, 'I see them all the time. I’ll go to special screenings. I’ll watch them with friends. Or if they’re on TV. I’ve seen "Parent Trap" upwards of like 50 to 60 times at least.'

During week two, Hendrix and partner Alan Bersten performed a jive to Toni Basil’s 'Mickey,' wearing cheerleading outfits as a nod to Evian and the film’s music-video vibe. Basil, 82, dropped by rehearsals and urged the pair to connect with each other and let Bersten be 'Mickey.' Hendrix said, 'This is a dream come true. It is always wild to me that people call me an icon.' She added that meeting Basil was nerve-wracking but memorable.

Off the floor, Hendrix’s longtime friend Lisa Ann Walter attended the show. 'We are each other’s biggest fans,' Walter said. 'We’re there for each other through the good times and the hard times.' Hendrix credited her co-star Alan Bersten as her 'show security blanket' and said Lisa is her 'life security blanket.' She also offered a nod to Meredith Blake from 'Parent Trap' during premiere night.

Between memories of 'Parent Trap' and future projects, Hendrix recalled reuniting with Lindsay Lohan in August for 'Freaky Friday'—nearly 30 years after they starred together in the 1998 family comedy—calling Lohan 'killing it' and saying they’re back in touch and excited about how her career has unfolded. 'She really is killing it,' Hendrix said, noting their reunion in August and their renewed friendship. 'We’re back in touch. It’s epic. I love where she’s at now.'

Asked about revisiting her past work, Hendrix said she watches her films, including 'Parent Trap,' repeatedly. 'I’ll go to screenings... I’ve seen "Parent Trap" upwards of 50 to 60 times at least,' she said. 'The joy that it brings other people, that’s the cherry on the icing.'

With no official confirmation of a 'Superstar' sequel, Hendrix remains open to revisiting her fan-favorite roles and acknowledges that the idea resonates with a devoted fanbase.
