Emma Watson breaks silence on rift with J.K. Rowling over anti-trans comments
Watson says she hopes to repair ties with Rowling while defending trans rights and stressing the importance of dialogue over cancellation.

Emma Watson has broken her silence about the public rift with J.K. Rowling, saying she hopes to mend ties with the author despite Rowling's assertion that she would never forgive Watson for speaking out in support of the trans community. Watson addressed the matter on Tuesday’s episode of the On Purpose podcast with host Jay Shetty, explaining that her commitment to trans rights does not erase the personal history she shares with Rowling.
Watson described her stance as an effort to hold two truths at once: her affection for the people she knows and the beliefs she now champions. 'I really don’t believe that by having had that experience [in Harry Potter] and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,' she said. She added that it is her deepest wish that people who don’t agree with her opinion will still love her, and that she can keep loving people who she doesn’t necessarily share the same opinion with. 'I really do believe in having conversations and that those are really important. I guess where I’ve landed is, it’s not so much what we say or what we believe, but very often how we say it.' She also stressed that she could never cancel Rowling or the films tied to their shared history, saying, 'There is no world in which I could ever cancel her out, or cancel [the movies] out for anything.'
Watson went further, acknowledging that some people may not be open to engaging with someone they are 'really angry and upset with.' She warned against a trend of labeling people as disposable, saying that society should not permit that mindset. 'I just see this world right now where we seem to be giving permission for … throwing out of people, or that people are disposable, and I will always think that’s wrong. I believe that no one is disposable. And everyone … no matter the conversation is, should and can be treated with, at the very least, dignity and respect.' She reiterated the importance of conversation and the way it is conducted, emphasizing that what matters is how a dialogue is carried out rather than simply what is said.
Watson’s comments come as she prepared to reassert her stance on a public platform, reinforcing her commitment to trans rights while leaving room for dialogue with Rowling. She has said she would remain open to a conversation with the author, underscoring a personal belief that people can disagree without erasing the humanity of one another.
The actress’s reflections touch on a broader debate that has animated fans and industry observers since Rowling’s earlier remarks in 2020. In a series of tweets, Rowling drew widespread backlash by arguing against the idea that sex is not real and by using language critics described as exclusionary toward transgender people. She wrote about the term people who menstruate and implied that it was important to acknowledge biological sex as part of women’s lived reality. The exchange echoed into later years, as Watson and others publicly opposed the author’s stance and behavior toward trans people.
Watson’s public response to Rowling’s past remarks has long been framed as a hinge point in the cultural debate surrounding the Harry Potter franchise. In 2020, Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the film series, issued a separate public stance via The Trevor Project, stating that transgender women are women and that it is essential to support transgender people in line with professional health care guidance. 'Transgender women are women,' Radcliffe wrote, adding that any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and runs counter to the guidance of health experts. Rowling’s own posture toward criticism has been less conciliatory in recent public comments, including a post on X in which she suggested that Watson and Radcliffe could save their apologies; she has also signaled a reluctance to entertain ongoing dialogue with them.
Watson has repeatedly highlighted a desire to separate the person she knows from the public disagreements that have arisen around the franchise. She has asserted that she will always value the conversations that can happen even with people who hold opposing views and that she hopes the broader public will treat those engaged in difficult discussions with respect. In her eyes, friendships and professional collaborations rooted in shared experiences can survive disagreements about social issues, provided conversations are conducted with care.
The ongoing exchange underscores a broader cultural moment in which major entertainment figures confront questions about gender, identity, and the responsibilities that come with public influence. Watson’s latest remarks do not resolve the rift, but they do set a tone of willingness to engage, learn, and separate personal affection from political or social disagreements.
As fans and observers watch how the relationship between Watson and Rowling might evolve, there is no clear sign of a closure to the dispute. The actors involved have both played pivotal roles in shaping contemporary perceptions of the franchise, and their public positions on trans rights continue to spark discussion among audiences, critics, and scholars of culture and entertainment alike. The dialogue remains ongoing, with Watson signaling openness to conversation and Rowling maintaining a stance that has drawn extensive scrutiny since 2020.
