HarperColins drops David Walliams; author denies allegations

HarperColins drops David Walliams; author denies allegations

LONDON — HarperCollins said Friday, December 20, 2025, it will not publish any new titles by British children's author David Walliams, a decision announced under the leadership of the company's new UK chief executive. The author is aware of the decision. Walliams' representatives said he has never been told of any allegations against him by HarperCollins, he was not party to any investigation or given an opportunity to respond, and he strongly denies any inappropriate behavior, adding that he is taking legal advice.

Walliams has published more than 40 children's books and sold more than 60 million copies worldwide, according to his website. Several titles, including Gangsta Granny, have been adapted for BBC comedy dramas and stage productions. Walliams left his role as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent in 2022 after apologizing for making disrespectful comments toward auditioning contestants.

HarperCollins said it would not comment on internal matters to respect the privacy of individuals and said it takes employee wellbeing extremely seriously and has processes in place for reporting and investigating concerns.

The decision underscores the evolving relationship between public figures and major publishers in a media landscape where allegations can trigger swift business consequences. Walliams remains a prominent figure in British children's literature, with bestsellers and adaptations in other media, while HarperCollins UK moves forward under new leadership. The Associated Press reported the decision on Friday.
