Lewis Capaldi stages impromptu rooftop gig on Aldi roof in Nottingham
The Scottish singer treated Aldi shoppers to a free rooftop performance ahead of a Nottingham show, joking about Capaldi on the roof and debuting a new single.

Lewis Capaldi surprised Nottingham shoppers with an impromptu rooftop performance at an Aldi on Friday, just hours before his concert in the city. Overlooking the car park, the 28-year-old Scottish singer joked to customers that he was “This is Capaldi on the roof of an Aldi,” and offered a lighthearted apology for potentially disrupting their shopping. He then launched into a short set as fans gathered nearby, delivering a mix of old favorites and new material.
The free gig featured a handful of songs, including the chart-topping hit “Someone You Loved” and his newly released single “Something in the Heavens.” Capaldi tested the audience’s tolerance for expletives, asking, “Can I swear? Am I allowed to swear? No?” before declaring, “F**k it.” He also used a piece of cardboard to mess with the store’s signage, spelling out “Capaldi” on the Aldi signs.
The rooftop moment came as Capaldi is in the midst of a UK tour, his first big run since his comeback show at Glastonbury in June. The performance on the Nottingham store roof echoed rock ’n’ roll tropes, with Capaldi alluding to the Beatles’ famed rooftop moment at Apple Corps HQ in 1969 as inspiration for the stunt. He treated the audience to a casual, crowd-pleasing set before continuing his tour, which includes a stop at the nearby Motorpoint Arena that night.
Fans in attendance had been tipped off via social media, and many lined up early to catch a glimpse and snag selfies with the singer between songs. Capaldi kept the mood light, joking about the store’s produce and offering handwritten moments with fans as he moved between the roof and the crowd below.
Earlier this year, Capaldi’s return to the spotlight followed his Glastonbury appearance, after a hiatus during which he has spoken publicly about managing Tourette’s syndrome. The London stop at the O2 last week also drew an emotional moment when a couple proposed in the crowd; Capaldi reacted with surprise and humor, suggesting the moment might be staged but offering congratulations regardless.
Nottingham marked another chapter in Capaldi’s ongoing touring cycle, which has seen him embrace live performances across the UK after long periods away from the road. He has used the shows to reintroduce himself to audiences while continuing to explore new music and reconnect with fans ahead of upcoming dates in the region.
