Portofino, Italy — Michelle Obama and Steven Spielberg were photographed in matching denim outfits as they vacation aboard Spielberg’s 357-foot superyacht with Barack Obama off the coast of Portofino.

Over the past several days, the former first lady, 61, and the former president, 64, have been aboard the vessel with the acclaimed director, 78, and his wife Kate Capshaw, 71, who joined the trip on the Italian Riviera.

Michelle wore baggy jeans, a black T-shirt tucked in, and a double-layer denim coat. She accessorized with dark sunglasses and carried a black sweater over her arm. Barack, meanwhile, wore white trousers, a black top, a brown bomber jacket and black sneakers, and he carried a black briefcase. Spielberg matched the look, wearing jeans, a black top and a denim jacket, with a tan sunhat. Capshaw kept it casual in jeans, a white blouse and sunglasses. The foursome spent time on the deck of the boat, posing for photographers before Michelle and Barack headed back to shore by tender.

The departure came after the group had spent several days aboard the yacht. Photographers observed the president shaking hands with crew members while Michelle embraced a staffer on the vessel. The couple then boarded a smaller boat for the ride to the mainland, flanked by security. Reports indicated Michelle boarded first, with Barack arriving hours later and appearing more reserved, though they were photographed greeting crew and staff as they left.

An insider told the Daily Mail that the trip was exactly what they needed, noting that it provided a chance to lay low and be together and that everyone was in good spirits.

Earlier this month, Barack joked about his ongoing efforts to appease Michelle since leaving office during a public appearance in Erie, Pennsylvania, saying he had spent “over eight years” trying to dig himself out of a hole with his wife and that progress felt incremental.

The sighting comes less than a week after Michelle and Barack sat down for a joint interview on Michelle’s podcast in July, addressing rumors about their marriage. In that exchange, they leaned into humor about the tabloid speculation while affirming their bond and commitment to their family. Michelle emphasized that she never considered quitting her husband, reflecting on the hardships and adventures they have shared over nearly 33 years of marriage.

The Obamas have two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and while public scrutiny of their relationship has periodically flared, they have continued to maintain a high-profile, private life focused on family and philanthropy. The Riviera getaway—paired with the high-profile company of Spielberg and Capshaw—highlights the couple’s ongoing public presence while they navigate questions about their personal lives amid ongoing public interest in their marriage.
