Miley Cyrus credits gardening as medicine keeping her grounded in five years of sobriety

Miley Cyrus has been sober for five years. In a conversation with Pamela Anderson for CR Fashion Book, the pop singer described what has helped her stay away from alcohol and how she has learned to value simple things in life despite fame and success.

Gardening and time outdoors are part of a personal practice that keeps her grounded, she said. "Having that has been the medicine that's kept me grounded in my sober lifestyle," Cyrus told Anderson. "Gardening is something you do for yourself. When we've shared so much of ourselves, having those little precious times with something simple - like putting a seed in the ground and nurturing it - becomes a very personal process." She added that she even jokes about her dog, saying she is "making sure my dog isn't digging mine up at this exact moment."

Cyrus described a hillside planting she did before a tour, which yielded unexpected blooms. "It's a genuine win when you put a seed in the ground and see flowers in the spring. I did that on a hillside a while ago," she said. She credited Vijat Mohindra for help with the seeds, calling him "the cutest little gay angel" and noting that he "threw these seeds, and I swear it never would’ve happened without him. When I came back, there were 10,000 daisies. I was like, 'We didn’t even throw these out—why do I have 40 species of roses in my backyard?'" The garden, she said, transformed her sense of home and beauty while keeping her away from the limelight.

Cyrus, who first rose to fame as a child on Hannah Montana, said she is not afraid to walk away from the entertainment industry. "Gardening is something you do for yourself. When we've shared so much of ourselves, having those little precious times with something simple - like putting a seed in the ground and nurturing it - it becomes a very personal process," she told CR Fashion Book. She added that she remains committed to show business for now, explaining that she has always been drawn back to the stage and cameras even as she reevaluates her path.

"I'm always redesigning, reimagining. I actually had this moment the other night where I was lying in bed thinking, 'Wow, I really jumped on a train when I was 11 years old, and I've never gotten off.'" She said she does not know when or if that moment will come to an end, but for the time being, her heart remains devoted to performing.

"I made a decision at 11, and I've never stopped. It wasn't until my late 20s and early 30s that I started reevaluating: 'Is this still what I want?' So far, the answer has been yes, but I'm not afraid of the day it's no."
