Miley Cyrus says gardening is medicine, helps sobriety

Miley Cyrus says gardening is her new hobby and a form of medicine that helps keep her sober. In a conversation with Pamela Anderson for CR Fashion Book, published on Monday, the singer outlined how tending plants has become a personal ritual. "Gardening is something you do for yourself," Cyrus said. "When we’ve shared so much of ourselves, having those little precious times with something simple — like putting a seed in the ground and nurturing it — it becomes a very personal process."

She described gardening as "medicine" and said it helps keep her "grounded in my sober lifestyle." "It’s part of a practice, the way yoga might be: getting out into nature, doing something with my hands, and having a creative outlet that isn’t about fame or success."

Cyrus has discussed sobriety in broader terms before, telling Apple Music’s Zane Lowe earlier this year that sobriety is "like my God" and that she "needs it, I live for it." "It’s changed my entire life," she said.

She also addressed touring, noting the challenges of staying sober on the road. In a July interview with Good Morning America, she said, "There’s artists like Prince that are not here today that lived such a high-intensity lifestyle out on the road," and added that "it’s really hard to maintain sobriety when you’re on the road, which is a really important, kind of, pillar of stability in my life."

Tuesday's remarks add to Cyrus’s ongoing public discussion of sobriety and self-care as a factor in her career. The CR Fashion Book interview provides another glimpse into how the singer is incorporating quieter, grounding activities into a life in the spotlight.
