Miss America Cassie Donegan defended her pageant makeup amid online criticism that followed her Sept. 7 coronation in Orlando, Florida. Critics argued her stage makeup looked heavy under the bright lights, and some even suggested that the runner up from Texas should have won.

Donegan told Fox News Digital that she expects opinions in a public forum but won't let the backlash define her year. She noted that negativity is part of the internet, yet she is focused on the support she has and the positive impact of the Miss America platform. She said she intends to use her reign to champion empowerment and unity, especially for younger girls who may doubt themselves.

She emphasized her desire to be a positive example for girls across the country, saying empowerment comes from within and that her goal is to help them believe in themselves even in challenging circumstances.

Donegan's victory also highlighted the organization's long history and resources. Miss America was conceived in 1921 and remains a major scholarship provider, awarding more than 5 million dollars in cash scholarships annually, plus additional scholarships at state and local levels. Donegan’s own prize included a 50,000 dollar tuition scholarship and a 3,000 dollar talent-prelim prize.

She drew on her personal background as a smaller town, lower income student who faced bullying and family health challenges, noting she did not come from lavish means but relied on sponsorships and accessible makeup. She emphasized that there are no rules requiring contestants to come from a certain background or to spend large sums, and stressed that the path to Miss America is open to those who believe in themselves.

Looking ahead, Donegan said her reign will center on unity in a divided nation, honoring veterans in her family and highlighting the importance of respectful dialogue across differences. She described Miss America as a space for people from diverse backgrounds to share authentic moments of connection and to listen to one another, with the hope that tolerance can translate into real-world unity.
