Morgan says Freddie Flintoff Top Gear crash not the car’s fault

Morgan Motor Company said the Morgan Super 3 was not at fault in Freddie Flintoff's December 2022 Top Gear crash. Flintoff, 47, was behind the wheel at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey when the lightweight three-wheeled car flipped during filming at about 22 mph. He sustained serious facial injuries and broken ribs, effectively ending his presenting role on the BBC motoring show. The company cited an independent evaluation that the car had a clean bill of health and said the Health and Safety Executive was involved, with no allegations against the car.

Production of the Super 3 is currently suspended, Morgan chief executive Matt Hole said, but the pause is due to Covid-related supply chain issues rather than concerns about safety. Hole emphasized that the incident has not damaged the model’s popularity, noting continued demand in the Middle East and the United States, where Flintoff's crash attracted little media attention.

Flintoff's Top Gear co-presenter Chris Harris has described the vehicle as challenging rather than dangerous. In a 2024 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Harris said the car's physics are complex and must be driven accordingly, adding that he regretted not briefing Flintoff on the car's quirks before filming that day.

BBC officials halted Top Gear filming and issued an apology to Flintoff after the crash. In October 2023, it was reported that Flintoff had received about £9 million in compensation from the broadcaster to cover lost earnings and damages.

Footage of the crash was not made public until this year. In April 2025, Disney+ released the trailer for Flintoff, a documentary about the sports star's life, which includes a glimpse of the immediate aftermath around the overturned Morgan. In the film, Flintoff says, "I remember everything about it. It's so vivid." He adds that part of his motivation for making the film was to set the record straight after months of speculation: "I've lived under the radar for seven months. One of the real frustrations was the speculation, that's why I'm doing this now – what actually happened."

Now visibly scarred, the father of four has described the accident as a "reset" in his life and says he is not hiding his scars as he works to understand who he is now.
