Spencer Matthews to front Channel 4 documentary Am I a Psychopath

Spencer Matthews, 37, will front a one-off Channel 4 documentary titled Spencer Matthews: Am I a Psychopath, in which he tests whether he truly fits the label after admitting a lack of empathy.

The Daily Mail reports that the former Made in Chelsea star, who is married to Vogue Williams, will lead the program produced by Mettlemouse for Channel 4. He volunteered after friends and family suggested he showed psychopathic traits. A TV insider described the project as a unique experiment not seen on British television, and noted Matthews is willing to reveal vulnerability to determine whether he could be diagnosed as a psychopath and whether a good psychopath concept exists.

Matthews has a track record of emotionally ambitious projects. In 2023 he fronted Finding Michael for Disney+, chronicling his mission to recover Michael Matthews’ body from Mount Everest. He is also preparing Seven in Seven, an endurance challenge that will see him complete seven Ironman triathlons on seven continents. Last year he earned a Guinness World Record after running 30 marathons in 30 consecutive days across the Jordanian desert, the most marathons completed on sand in a single month.

In Spencer Matthews: Am I a Psychopath the documentary will explore whether someone can be both empathetic and capable of callous behavior, and whether there is a distinction between a so-called good psychopath and harmful traits. The project will examine how psychopathy manifests in behavior and whether certain traits can coexist with everyday functioning and relationships.

Matthews has long been curious about psychopathy due to self‑suspicions about his own traits and his admitted lack of empathy. The program is set to investigate whether he might carry psychopathic traits and whether the journey can broaden public understanding of the condition and its complexities.

The project draws on Matthews’ earlier appearances in emotion-driven formats. He has spoken openly about his interest in the subject since his 2017 participation in All 4’s Celebrity Psych Test with Jamie Laing, where he discussed fears about lacking empathy and the goal of increasing empathy. The documentary will also place his personal history in the context of his broader television career, including prominent moments from Made in Chelsea.

Produced by Mettlemouse for Channel 4, the project asks whether a person can be labeled a psychopath and still maintain ties to family and friends. Matthews’ public life also overlaps with his family life; he and Vogue Williams share three children, Theodore, Gigi, and Otto, and were married in 2018. The documentary comes as he continues a high-profile run of endurance challenges and personal investigations into the human mind, aiming to support a nuanced conversation about psychopathy and its manifestations in modern society.
