Tears for Fears's Roland Orzabal and wife Emily welcome first child
Birth confirmed by bandmate Curt Smith; couple privately eloped in 2020 and later staged a public ceremony

Tears for Fears co-founder Roland Orzabal and his wife Emily have welcomed their first child together, a baby girl born in June. The birth was later confirmed by bandmate Curt Smith in an interview with Vulture in August, who said the couple had a baby in June and that the summer touring planned for the band was canceled to stay close to home.
Emily Orzabal, a photographer, first revealed the pregnancy in June with a photo showing her cradling her baby bump while wearing a white and tan striped midi dress. The post drew congratulations from fans on social media as anticipation built for the couple’s baby news.
In August, Smith told Vulture that the band had planned a summer tour but canceled after the baby arrived, noting that the timing made it impractical to be away from home so close to the birth. He did not disclose the baby’s name publicly.
The couple’s private life has long included a story of resilience and adaptation. Emily revealed that Roland and she secretly eloped on Aspen Mountain in Colorado in 2020 after postponing their original wedding date because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She described a small, intimate ceremony atop the peak and said they would hold a larger celebration later with friends and family.
A year after the Aspen elopement, they staged a celebratory wedding with loved ones at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. Emily has said the early ceremony was private and emotional, and that a future celebration would incorporate different elements—she noted plans to wear a different dress and to host a more expansive event next year.
Roland Orzabal, best known as one half of Tears for Fears alongside Curt Smith, has spoken publicly about the upheavals in his personal life. He has two sons, Pascal and Raoul, from his previous marriage to Caroline Orzabal, who died in July 2017 after suffering from alcoholism-related dementia and cirrhosis. He has described a difficult period in the years that followed, including rehab, as pivotal moments that fed into the band’s seventh studio LP, The Tipping Point.
In 2024 Tears for Fears released the song Emily Said, which Emily herself interpreted as a tribute to their evolving story. She wrote on social media that it was a good day for Emilys around the world because the band had released a song about them, linking the public-facing chapter of their relationship with the band’s ongoing creative arc.
Fans quickly greeted the baby news with warm messages on the couple’s social channels, congratulating them and wishing the growing family happiness and health. The public, as with much of the band’s story, has followed with notable interest, celebrating both the music and the personal milestones the pair has navigated over the years.
