Three-Michelin-Star Chef Sergio Herman Brings 'World's Best' Fries to London

The world's best fries have landed in the United Kingdom. Frites Atelier, the Dutch luxury fry concept created by three-Michelin-star chef Sergio Herman, has opened its first UK restaurant in Soho, London, at 34 Old Compton Street. The outlet bills itself as offering luxury frites and invites diners to explore a menu built around a simple chip elevated by an array of toppings.

The menu centers on fries with a range of toppings, including four dedicated “Frites Specials,” such as Cheddar Supreme and Parmesan and basil fries served with Flemish beef stew, and Sea Nori fries. Prices run from £8.95 to £14.50 per serving. The venue also offers croquettes priced at £6.95 and burgers, with a drinks list that spans beer, espresso martinis, margaritas and champagne. The brand’s messaging positions Frites Atelier Frites as a gourmet culinary experience that defies convention, with a pairing of luxurious sauces to complement the chips.

Herman told The Times that potatoes are a very simple product, but it is not easy to create something that stands out. He reportedly tested multiple potato varieties and recipes before perfecting the fries. The Soho location marks the UK outpost of a Dutch brand that first opened in the Netherlands, with Metro noting that this is Frites Atelier’s first foray outside the Netherlands. The Times report adds that Herman drew inspiration from Belgian street culture, where chips are a staple and often served with a pot of mayonnaise alongside a hearty stew.

Open Wednesday through Saturday, the Soho venue stays open until 3am, and it closes at midnight from Sunday to Tuesday, signaling a late-night dining option in one of London’s busiest nightlife corridors. Since its launch, the restaurant has generated positive online chatter, with a Google rating of about 4.8 stars. Patrons have praised the concept and the quality of the toppings, noting that the place looks striking and that staff are friendly and attentive. One reviewer said, “What a great idea. Chips done special! Fab combinations and sauces. Shrimp croquettes were superb.” Another wrote that the product is well prepared and delicious, and that the staff are “very friendly and approachable.” These anecdotes underscore the appetite for elevated snack experiences in the city’s dining scene.

The arrival of Frites Atelier in London aligns with a broader appetite for premium, chef-led reinterpretations of everyday foods in Culture & Entertainment coverage. By transplanting a Dutch concept championed by a三-Michelin-star chef to a London crowd, the restaurant aims to fuse accessibility with culinary craft, turning a simple fry into a destination item for diners seeking novelty as well as quality. The opening also reflects how London’s Soho area continues to attract high-concept culinary brands that pair late-night hours with distinctive menus, contributing to the neighborhood’s evolving dining landscape.
