Wales' Bluestone becomes Christmasland, a Lapland-like escape at a fraction of the price
A Pembrokeshire resort reimagines its grounds for the holidays with Elf School, Santa visits, and a life-size snow globe, offering a budget-friendly festive break.

Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has transformed its 500-acre grounds into Christmasland for the holiday season, offering a festive suite of activities that position the site as Wales’ answer to Center Parcs and a cheaper stand-in for a lapland-style break.
The Mail’s Heath Editor Kate Pickles visited with her family to test the offering, staying in Merlin’s Crest, a three-bedroom lodge the author’s children described as an “upside-down” home with bedrooms and baths on the ground floor and a light-filled lounge, kitchen and sunroom above to maximize views of the surrounding countryside. The accommodation also includes an electric buggy to shuttle guests around the park, with stops at attractions such as Rudolph’s Breakfast Barn and the Snow Globe. Sophie, four, and Jack, six, delighted in spotting a giant inflatable snowman and the sightlines of a Christmas village that decorates every shop window as festive music fills the air.
Elf School is a centerpiece of Bluestone’s seasonal transformation. Inside a classroom space lit with hanging snowflakes and string lights, a cohort of trainee elves is put through tasks that echo a land far from the Arctic. Recruits help Professor Stampalot fix magical letterboxes so children can send messages directly to Santa, and deliver baubles through pipes to provide Christmas decorations for homes inside the park. The overall aim is to cultivate a sense of wonder and hands-on involvement in the holiday narrative for families who prefer a domestic, affordable festive break.
There is a final, high-profile test known as the Believer’s Ball. The head elf asks every child, “Do you believe?” Then each youngster lifts the lid of their desk to press a magic button, signaling whether they are indeed a believer in Santa. The room erupts with cheers when the signal is affirmative, marking the culmination of the day’s training with a simple, shared moment of joy.
Nestled in the resort’s sprawling grounds, the activity slate expands well beyond Elf School. The Serendome, a large indoor-outdoor area beneath a giant transparent dome, is transformed into a life-sized snow globe during the winter months. The Blue Lagoon waterpark and the Hive activity centre likewise receive festive makeovers, ensuring there is always something to do within the resort’s gates. Guests are handed welcome packs on arrival, which include a blank letter to Santa that can be posted at the program’s designated post point or handed to Father Christmas during a 15-minute one-to-one session.
As families navigate the resort, a procession of festive characters and illuminated storefronts keeps the mood buoyant. A parade-like moment near the main hub features a Santa on a festive float waving to excited youngsters and their families as they weave toward Santa’s Lodge for the main encounter. The little ones whisper questions and confirm their Christmas lists before moving on to the private session that seals the kid’s promise to be good and to leave a drink and a carrot for Rudolph.
The Bluestone experience is anchored by its lodges, with Merlin’s Crest serving as the primary residence for many holidaymakers. The three-bedroom unit spared no luxury in atmosphere, and its top-floor living area affords panoramas of the surrounding countryside through large windows. The resort markets the stay as a multi-generational escape: a chance to unwind in a winter Wonderland nearby, without the long-distance travel or the higher costs associated with a trip to more far-flung Lapland destinations.
This year’s offering arrives amid mild November weather, with daytime temperatures hovering around 14C and a foam snow effect providing a seasonal backdrop even when the sun shines. The contrast between the warm weather and the winter décor underscores Bluestone’s aim: to furnish an immersive, family-centered Christmas experience closer to home. In this sense, the resort’s Christmasland is positioned as a practical alternative to longer, international holiday plans, appealing to families seeking a festive, low-stress break.
The experience is built to be accessible and family-centered. Parents can look forward to a bundle of activities, a comfortable home base in Merlin’s Crest, and the convenience of integrated experiences—like the One-to-One Santa visit—designed to minimize downtime and maximize the sense of holiday magic. For those who crave a ready-made Christmas environment without the price tag of a far-flung trip, Bluestone’s approach presents a compelling option.
Overall, the Christmasland transformation at Bluestone National Park Resort emphasizes a domestic, affordable festive alternative that can be enjoyed within a few hours’ drive of home. It blends familiar seasonal rituals with a resort atmosphere, offering a curated version of Christmas that prioritizes accessibility, family-friendly activities and a sense of wonder—without the long-haul travel or the high costs commonly associated with traditional Lapland trips.
