Zootopia 2 regains No. 1 at box office, grosses $1B worldwide

Disney animated sequel leads a quiet weekend as Avatar: Fire and Ash looms on the horizon

Zootopia 2 regains No. 1 at box office, grosses $1B worldwide

Zootopia 2 regained the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office in its third weekend, earning an estimated $26.3 million, according to studio tallies released Sunday. The Walt Disney Co. animated sequel also crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales, becoming the year’s second film to do so. With Avatar: Fire and Ash arriving Friday, theaters faced a relatively light slate, leaving the two holdovers — Zootopia 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 — to vie for the top spot.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 followed in second place with about $19.5 million in its second weekend, a 70% drop from its debut. The Blumhouse/Universal horror film has a domestic total of roughly $95.5 million on a $36 million production budget. The weekend's only other notable wide release was Ella McCay, James L. Brooks’s first film directing in 15 years, which opened to weak numbers.

Ella McCay, Brooks’s return to feature directing, opened to about $2.1 million from 2,500 locations. Critics’ early reviews were tepid, contributing to limited audience interest for the comic drama about a 34-year-old woman who becomes governor of her home state. The film, which stars Emma Mackey and includes a supporting cast featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, Ayo Edebiri and Woody Harrelson, carried a budget of about $35 million.

Globally, Zootopia 2 has reached roughly $1.14 billion in ticket sales, with China alone contributing about $502.4 million and helping make the film the biggest Hollywood hit in the country in years. The year’s other standout global performer so far is Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which has surpassed $1.04 billion worldwide, while the top overall title of 2025 remains the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which has earned nearly $2 billion in its home market.

Year-to-date domestic sales remain near the level of last year’s disappointing totals, and Hollywood is counting on the holiday corridor to lift results. On tap this season are releases including Avatar: Fire and Ash, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Marty Supreme, Anaconda and Song Sung Blue, among others. Final domestic figures are expected to be released Monday by Comscore.
