17-year-old dies after being shot in face at Bronx basketball event; second victim in gang-related shooting

A 17-year-old girl who was shot in the face during a gang-related shooting at a Bronx basketball tournament died Monday, the New York Police Department said, becoming the second fatality from the Aug. 23 incident.

Anthonaya Campbell, 17, had been in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital since the shooting at Haffen Park and was pronounced dead Monday from the gunshot wound to her face, according to the NYPD and a social media post by a friend. The earlier victim, identified as 32-year-old Jaceil Banks, was pronounced dead on arrival at Jacobi after the shooting, police said.

Police said dozens of shots were fired as a late-summer basketball tournament drew a large crowd. One firearm was recovered at the scene and dozens of shell casings were collected by investigators. Three other adults were wounded in the incident and were treated for injuries, officials said.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the Haffen Park shooting and face serious charges. Authorities charged Daeven Reyes, 20; Robert Royal, 25; a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy with murder, four counts of attempted murder, gang assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said. One of the attempted-murder charges is expected to be upgraded to a murder charge following Campbell’s death, police officials said.

Campbell’s mother, Jennifer Talbot, told The Post that her daughter was visiting friends in the city when she was struck. In a social media post, a member of Alpha & Omega Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ Inc. described Campbell as "a joyful person" who "loves everybody" and called for an end to the shootings.

The NYPD is treating Campbell’s death as a homicide. Investigators have been collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of an ongoing probe; police did not immediately release further details about the motive or a timeline for court appearances by the suspects.

The Aug. 23 shooting at Haffen Park added to a string of violent incidents in the Bronx in recent weeks. Authorities said a separate drive-by shooting last week, which officials also described as gang-related, left one man dead and four others injured.

Community leaders and relatives of the victims have called for greater efforts to curb gun violence in the borough. Police officials said they continue to coordinate with prosecutors as charges are reviewed and potential upgrades are pursued in light of Campbell’s death.
