FDA issues urgent recall for cakes sold in Kroger and Ukrop’s stores over undeclared soy

Federal health officials on Thursday announced an urgent recall of four Decorated Pound Cakes produced by Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods after soy used in a cake releasing agent was not declared on the packaging. The recall covers cakes sold at 28 Kroger Mid-Atlantic and Ukrop’s Market Hall stores in Virginia and West Virginia. The best-by date on the affected products is December 15, 2025. No other Ukrop’s products are involved, and no illnesses have been reported to date.

The four recalled varieties are: 8-inch Pound Cake with Buttercream Icing/Pink Roses; 8-inch Pound Cake with Buttercream Icing/Red Roses; 6-inch Pound Cake with Buttercream Icing/Red Roses; and 6-inch Pound Cake with Buttercream Icing/Confetti. Each cake bears a UPC code: 72252591452, 72252591456, 72252591820, and 72252591849, respectively.

Consumers who purchased the recalled cakes should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The cakes contain soy, an allergen that can trigger reactions in people with soy allergies. For some individuals, exposure can cause mild symptoms such as hives or itching, or more severe, potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, which can include throat swelling, vomiting, dizziness and difficulty breathing. There have been no reports of illnesses linked to these cakes.

Separately, the FDA earlier this month announced a recall of Lunds & Byerlys Monster Cookies after undeclared peanuts, eggs and soy were found on the labels. The cookies, sold in the Twin Cities and St. Cloud areas of Minnesota since November 15, carried UPC 18169-66862. No illnesses have been reported.

Consumers are urged to check product labels and discard recalled items or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
