FDA recalls 57,000 Target burrito bowls over undeclared shrimp allergy risk

The Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall Saturday of more than 57,000 Good & Gather Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend meals sold at Target after the products were found to contain undeclared shrimp, posing a potential life‑threatening allergy risk.

One Frozen, the manufacturer, said the affected 12‑ounce "steam in a bag" packages, which are red and stamped with a "Best Used By" date of Aug. 24, 2026, were distributed to Target stores in all 50 states beginning April 17. The company identified the recall after the mislabeling was flagged; the FDA posting said no illnesses related to the product have been reported.

Consumers who find the product bearing any of the lot codes 5055-1, L5055-2, L5055-3, L5055-4, L5055-5 or L5055-6 are advised not to eat it. The FDA and One Frozen urged customers to discard the product or return it to Target for a full refund; Target guest relations can process refunds, the recall notice said.

Shellfish allergies are common and can produce rapid, severe reactions including anaphylaxis, which can begin within seconds of exposure, according to the Mayo Clinic. Less severe symptoms can include facial swelling, hives, gastrointestinal distress and dizziness. The FDA routinely posts recall notices when undeclared allergens are discovered because even trace amounts of a mislabeled allergen can endanger people with allergies.

The recall follows other recent product withdrawals involving Target. In August, more than 12,000 Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies were recalled over concerns they might contain pieces of wood; those cookies, produced by Give and Go, were distributed to multiple Target distribution centers and stores. Target has also been involved in previous recalls related to home products such as kitchen step stools.

The FDA and One Frozen said they are continuing to investigate how the shrimp came to be present in the mislabeled burrito bowls and are working to prevent similar errors. Consumers with questions about the recalled product can contact Target guest relations or consult the FDA recall announcement for further details and guidance.
