Florida woman delivers nearly 14-pound newborn nicknamed 'Sumo', hospital says it may be a record

A Florida mother delivered a nearly 14‑pound baby boy who staff at her hospital said may be the largest ever born at that facility.

Daniella Hines, 40, gave birth to her son, Annan, on Sept. 3 at St. Joseph’s Hospital‑South in Riverview. Nurses weighed the newborn at 13 pounds, 15 ounces, and hospital staff posted on Facebook calling him a “big miracle” and saying Annan was believed to be among the biggest, if not the biggest, babies ever born at the hospital.

Hines and her husband, Andre Sr., said they were surprised by the final weight. At six feet tall with her husband about 6‑foot‑2, Hines said she expected a larger baby but was still stunned when Annan was handed to her after a second‑time Cesarean delivery. “I remember thinking, ‘What are they pulling out of me? What is going on here?’ I felt so much pressure,” she told TODAY. Her confusion gave way to disbelief when she saw the newborn. “He was so big. I was like, ‘Whose baby is this? He came out of me?’” she said.

Staff quickly gathered on the maternity ward to see the newborn, Hines said. “Everybody starts coming in because it’s not every day you see an almost 14 pound baby pop out,” she said. “He was like a little celebrity.” The family has nicknamed him “Sumo.” Annan was Hines and Andre Sr.’s second child; their first son, Andre Jr., weighed 12 pounds, 11 ounces at birth.

Hines said Annan was doing well at home in his first week and had already outgrown newborn clothing, wearing six‑to‑nine‑month outfits and size‑2 diapers at eight days old. She wrote on social media that she was continuing to recover from her second C‑section, performed because the pregnancy was considered high‑risk due to the expected birth weight.

Hospital officials thanked the family for allowing staff to share the milestone on social media, and Hines responded on the hospital post with appreciation for the care she received. The family has posted photos of Annan resting and said they were “so in love with the newest addition to the family.”

Births of this size are uncommon but not unprecedented. In March, a mother in Alabama gave birth to a girl who weighed 13 pounds, 4 ounces. In 2019, a New York woman, Joy Buckley, delivered a girl reported at 15 pounds, 5 ounces. The Guinness World Record for the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother remains a boy born in Aversa, Italy, in September 1955, who reportedly weighed 22 pounds, 8 ounces.

Hines said the family’s immediate focus is on Annan’s health and on adjusting to caring for a larger newborn. “We didn’t expect such a big blessing, but it’s just more to love,” she said.
