Former Florida nurse sentenced to two years in prison for sex with teen stepson

A former Florida nurse was sentenced to two years in state prison after her husband caught her having sex with his 15-year-old stepson last year. Alexis Von Yates, a licensed nurse, pleaded no contest to lewd or lascivious battery on a child between 12 and 16, a charge reduced from sexual battery by a person in familial authority. The incident took place July 26, 2024, in Marion County, where the teen was staying with the couple for the summer.

On the night of the incident, the father was working a late shift as a lineman while Von Yates and the boy stayed up after his siblings went to bed. They smoked a THC cartridge, played video games and watched a horror movie on the couch; as they sat close, prosecutors said she told the boy she was "horny" and had been making sexual jokes in the days leading up to the confrontation when the father barged in. He opened the door and confronted them, and the boy ran to the bathroom while his father drove him to his grandparents’ home. The Florida Department of Health suspended Von Yates’s nursing license shortly after her arrest in November 2024.

The plea deal was presented at a sentencing hearing before Florida Fifth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Timothy T. McCourt, who accepted it after the victim’s family agreed to it. The victim’s mother described Von Yates as an "incestuous pedophile" who groomed and violated her son and said she showed no remorse. The mother said the boy’s father has not spoken to his son since the incident. As part of the agreement, Von Yates will serve two years in state prison, followed by two years of community control and ten years of sex offender probation. She also was ordered to complete two hundred hours of community service and to pay fines and court costs. The case was prompted by an anonymous tip four days after the July 2024 incident, triggering the police investigation.
