Jessie J preparing for second breast cancer operation after post-mastectomy complications
The singer, 37, says she feels 'in the middle of a storm with my umbrella up' as she updates fans after a recent hospital readmission and a return to the stage

Jessie J said she feels "in the middle of a storm with my umbrella up" as she prepares for a second breast cancer operation following complications from a mastectomy earlier this year.
The 37-year-old singer underwent a mastectomy in June after an early diagnosis. She was rushed back to hospital last month with an infection and fluid on her lungs, which her team attributed to a weakened immune system, and was subsequently advised to cancel tour dates while doctors plan further surgery.
Speaking on Capital XTRA with friend Manny Norte, Jessie J provided a personal health update and described her outlook. "I feel good! I feel like I'm obviously still… I feel like I'm in the middle of a storm, but I'm just making sure that my umbrella is up," she said. She confirmed another operation is scheduled "in a couple of weeks" and said perspective has been important during recovery.
On the implant and her post-surgical sensation, Jessie J said, "It's so weird. So weird. I can't feel it. I don't have much sensation." She added that healing varies between people and described the physical experience as "your skin is kind of just put over an implant. So, it's just there for show, basically."
The singer returned to the stage at BBC Radio 2 In the Park in Chelmsford, Essex, for her first live performance since the mastectomy. She told the crowd she had undergone breast cancer surgery "11 weeks ago today" and acknowledged she was still in recovery but grateful to perform. Her two-year-old son, Sky, watched backstage.
Jessie J also spoke about the timing of her new song "Living My Best Life," saying she was diagnosed two weeks before the single's release and chose to continue working. "Life is about standing in the storm but holding up your umbrella and just keep moving forward," she told the audience, adding that music has been a source of healing.
Her statements follow the earlier hospital readmission and cancelled tour dates. Medical teams overseeing cancer treatment commonly adjust plans based on post-operative complications and patient recovery; Jessie J's management has not released additional clinical details beyond her account.
She has shared her experience publicly as she moves toward a second operation, balancing recovery with selective performances and family time. Jessie J did not provide a specific date for the upcoming procedure during the interview, but said she remains optimistic and focused on recovery.
