Joe Biden Undergoes Mohs Surgery to Remove Skin Cancer on Forehead

Former President Joe Biden underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead, his spokesperson Kelly Scully said Thursday, the latest in a series of recent health developments for the former president.

Scully confirmed that Biden received Mohs surgery, a technique in which layers of skin are progressively removed and examined until no evidence of cancer remains. The confirmation followed publication of video by Inside Edition showing Biden leaving church in Delaware with what appeared to be a fresh scar on his forehead.

Two years ago, while he was serving as president, Biden had a separate lesion removed from his chest that was diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. In May, his office announced a diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. At the time of that announcement, Biden wrote on social media, "Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places."

Mohs surgery is commonly used to treat certain skin cancers because it allows surgeons to preserve healthy tissue while ensuring that cancerous cells are removed. Scully did not provide further medical details, including when the forehead procedure took place, where it was performed or the type of skin cancer identified.

The confirmation of the procedure comes as Biden continues to be public about his ongoing cancer diagnosis and treatment. His May announcement of metastatic prostate cancer prompted updates from his office about therapy and monitoring; the removal of the forehead lesion adds to a recent sequence of health-related procedures disclosed by the former president's team.

Biden's medical history, as disclosed by his office, has included skin procedures and the more recent announcement regarding prostate cancer. Officials have said treatments and follow-up care are ongoing, and the former president has issued public statements acknowledging the personal and universal impact of cancer.

No additional comment was immediately available from Biden's office beyond Scully's confirmation. News organizations have sought further details and will report additional information as it is released by the former president's team.
