Pete Davidson credits conversation with his mom for sobriety, marks more than a year sober ahead of fatherhood

Pete Davidson says he is sober for more than a year, thanks to a life-changing talk with his mother, he revealed on Theo Von’s podcast This Past Weekend. The Bupkis actor has been open about his sobriety journey and noted that he once sabotaged relationships before making a commitment to sobriety.

Davidson recalled that during his rehab his mother, described as the most supportive person in the world, called him with a fear that shook him: "My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and see that my son has died." He said that moment killed him and that he told himself, "Alright, can't die until she is dead, at least."

Now, over a year sober, Davidson is preparing to welcome his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt. The two were first linked in March, and Hewitt announced the baby news in July with the line "Welp, now everyone knows we had sex."

Davidson has spoken about a family history that has shaped his path toward recovery. His father died in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and his mother has endured significant heartbreak. He said he would have to be a sociopath not to get his life together.

The comedian expressed gratitude for the support he has received and for Hewitt's presence as he moves into this next chapter. He said, "I’m very grateful that it happened now" and that it happened with Hewitt by his side.

As he focuses on sobriety and fatherhood, Davidson emphasized that the moment of change came from within and from the people who love him most.
