Poisoning-risk recalls issued for personal care products sold at Target, Walmart and Amazon

Two personal care products sold at Target, Walmart and on Amazon have been recalled after regulators found their packaging is not child-resistant and could cause poisoning or death if swallowed by young children. The recalls, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), involve Mamisan Pain Relieving Topical Ointment and Feel The Beard Minoxidil Beard Growth Oil. Both products were distributed nationwide and were sold in retailers and online. The CPSC warns that because the contents could be lethal if ingested by children, packaging must be child-resistant.

Mamisan Ointment details: Plantimex, a Florida-based company, recalled 50,000 bottles of Mamisan Pain Relieving Topical Ointment in 3.52-ounce yellow plastic jars after officials found the packaging lacked child-resistant features. The cream contains four percent lidocaine and was marketed to ease muscle pain. It was sold nationwide at Target and Walmart between April 2024 and October 2025. The CPSC says lidocaine can stop the heart if ingested, and therefore the product must have child-resistant packaging. Consumers are advised to keep the jars out of reach of children and contact Plantimex to obtain child-resistant lids or arrange a replacement.

Feel The Beard Minoxidil: On the same day, 840 1-ounce dark amber bottles of Feel The Beard Minoxidil Beard Growth Oil were recalled. The China-made product, sold for about $10 on Amazon, contained minoxidil, a substance that can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure if swallowed, and was not packaged in child-resistant containers. In the United States, minoxidil products must be sold in child-resistant packaging. Consumers should move the oil out of reach and contact Feel The Beard for disposal instructions and to arrange a replacement. The oil was sold nationwide from April through September this year. No injuries or fatalities have been reported in either recall to date.

Public health context: Poisonings trigger tens of thousands of hospitalizations among children each year. About 60,000 children under five are hospitalized in the United States annually for poisoning incidents, and roughly 49 die from these cases, according to federal data. The CPSC notes that millions of products—particularly prescription and many over-the-counter medications—are sold in child-resistant packaging in the U.S.

How the issue was detected: Authorities did not specify how the packaging problems were discovered; it may have resulted from inspections or consumer reports to the CPSC.
