River Cottage restaurant in Devon given one-star food hygiene rating
East Devon council finds major food safety and cleanliness failings at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's flagship site despite some good food-handling practices

River Cottage Limited, the flagship restaurant in Musbury, Devon associated with chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, was awarded one out of five stars in a food hygiene inspection conducted by East Devon District Council.
A council report following an inspection on Aug. 7 found that the site required "major improvements" in the management of food safety. Inspectors identified shortcomings in the cleanliness and condition of facilities, including areas for hand washing, pest control and ventilation, and said staff demonstrated insufficient knowledge about food safety. The handling of food — including preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage — was judged to be good.
The one-star rating comes from the Food Standards Agency scheme, under which businesses are scored from zero to five: one star indicates that major improvement is necessary. The ratings are intended to be displayed by businesses both on-premises and online so customers can assess hygiene standards.
River Cottage is best known as the brand used by Fearnley-Whittingstall for a Channel 4 television series and for a range of cookery courses, events and food products. The Musbury site describes itself as a cafe offering a "warm, dog-friendly space" for breakfast, lunch, drinks and cakes with views over the Axe Valley and promotes a farm-to-fork ethos, championing organic and locally sourced food.
The inspection report’s findings highlight the distinction between food-handling practices and broader premises management. While inspectors recorded satisfactory practices in the way food was prepared and stored, they said systems and documentation to ensure ongoing food safety management needed improvement and that physical aspects of the premises required attention to meet expected standards.
A one-star rating signals to consumers and regulators that further action is required to raise hygiene standards to a satisfactory level. Local authorities maintain records of hygiene inspections and can carry out follow-up checks to assess compliance with required improvements.
River Cottage Limited and representatives for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall did not provide a comment in the inspection document. The business has previously built its reputation on local sourcing and sustainable food production, and the rating will likely prompt scrutiny from customers and regulators as the site addresses the issues raised by East Devon District Council.
