West Coast Governors Form Health Alliance to Coordinate Vaccine Guidance

Three Democratic governors announced on Wednesday the formation of a regional partnership intended to provide science-based vaccine guidance for residents of California, Oregon and Washington, saying federal health leadership has been undermined by political interference.

Govs. Gavin Newsom of California, Tina Kotek of Oregon and Bob Ferguson of Washington said in a joint statement that the new West Coast Health Alliance was created to fill what they described as a vacuum at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "President Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists — and his blatant politicization of the agency — is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people," the governors said.

In their statement the governors added, "The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences. California, Oregon, and Washington will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk." A press release accompanying the announcement said the three states will work together to coordinate health guidelines, though it provided limited operational detail on the partnership's structure and immediate activities.

The alliance was framed as a response to recent upheaval at the federal public health agency. The governors cited the removal of CDC employees and other changes at the agency as undermining public confidence in national guidance and said the regional effort was designed to ensure residents receive consistent, evidence-based information about vaccines.

State officials have in recent months occasionally issued guidance that differs from federal recommendations on a range of public health issues. The new West Coast Health Alliance signals an effort by the three states to align their approaches and messaging around vaccines and other health guidance, according to the announcement.

Newsom, Kotek and Ferguson said the partnership would help ensure that their constituents "can rely on science-based health guidance." The statement and press release did not specify whether the alliance would create a standing advisory body, share laboratory resources or issue unified mandates; officials said further details would be made available as the partnership develops.

Public health experts have long said that clear, consistent communication is critical to vaccine confidence and uptake. Regional coordination among states can provide a unified front for messaging and may allow governments to pool expertise; governors who announced the alliance portrayed the move as necessary to protect public health in the face of what they characterized as political interference at the federal level.

Officials from the three states did not provide a timeline for the rollout of coordinated guidance or a schedule for public updates. The West Coast Health Alliance will begin with the stated goal of ensuring access to science-based vaccine information for residents of California, Oregon and Washington.
