William Shatner, the 94-year-old star of Star Trek, was rushed to a hospital after a medical emergency at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday afternoon. Los Angeles Fire Department officials said an ambulance responded to treat a reported blood-sugar issue, and Shatner called emergency services himself after realizing something was wrong. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, and officials described him as doing well and resting comfortably.

TMZ reported that the actor called emergency services after recognizing symptoms. The New York Post, which published the initial report, said representatives for Shatner had not yet provided an update, and The Post said it had reached out to his representatives for comment.

In March 2024, Shatner disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, an advanced form of skin cancer that had spread to other parts of his body. He said he underwent surgery to remove a lump and credited a strict immunotherapy regimen with saving his life and helping him become cancer-free, noting that he faced a dire prognosis if treatment did not work.

Shatner has also spoken openly about permanent tinnitus, a condition that can cause ringing or other noises in the ears. He has attributed his tinnitus to a 1967 Star Trek episode, the explosion on the set of Arena, and medical experts say tinnitus can be temporary or chronic.

Despite his age and past health scares, Shatner has remained active. In 2021, at age 90, he flew aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-18 mission and called the experience profound. Earlier this month, he announced plans to travel to the Galapagos Islands in November for a “Space 2 Sea” convention, with guest speakers including Neil deGrasse Tyson and former NASA astronaut Kathryn Sullivan.

There were no immediate updates on Shatner’s condition, and representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Post and other outlets said they would report any new information as it became available.

The actor’s public timeline has included a sustained health narrative, including a cancer battle that was publicly discussed in March 2024 and a life of high-profile, physically demanding engagements well into his 90s. In a 2021 interview, Shatner described spaceflight as a “profound experience” and said the mission underscored life’s interconnectedness. He has also signaled plans for future appearances and appearances in science outreach contexts, such as the Space 2 Sea convention in the Galapagos.
