4.3-magnitude earthquake jolts San Francisco Bay Area, felt from Berkeley to Salinas

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted the San Francisco Bay Area early Monday, with the epicenter just east-southeast of Berkeley, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, which occurred shortly before 3 a.m. PDT, was felt by about 22,000 people across the region, the USGS reported.

Bay Area Rapid Transit said trains were running at reduced speeds as crews completed safety track inspections, and riders were cautioned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes systemwide. San Francisco's Department of Emergency Management said there were no injuries reported and no damage posted as of early morning. San Francisco Mayor Dan Lurie posted online that first responders were assessing any impact and would provide updates later today.

Social media posts showed residents awake and reporting items moved or falling from shelves. News outlets noted the quake was felt as far south as Salinas, about 100 miles from Berkeley.

Officials said there were no injuries and no damage reported in San Francisco as investigators began to assess aftershocks and the quake’s broader impact. The event underscored the ongoing seismic risk in the Bay Area, where residents and authorities remain vigilant for potential aftershocks and related disruptions.

Local authorities urged residents to stay aware of updates from transit agencies and emergency management offices, and to be prepared for possible additional tremors.
