17-year-old high school golf standout dies after collapsing during homecoming prank

A 17-year-old high school golfer collapsed and died Monday morning while participating in a homecoming prank, Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith said, leaving a small Georgia community and area teams mourning one of their top athletes.

Hadden Kelly, a junior at Dodge County High School, was taking part in a toilet-papering prank with friends around 9 a.m. when a friend found him unresponsive, Smith told 41 NBC. Kelly was rushed to Dodge County Hospital and was pronounced dead in the emergency room, the coroner said. The cause of death is unclear and an autopsy has been ordered.

School officials and teammates described Kelly as the program’s top performer and an encouraging leader. In a memorial post on the team’s Facebook page, coaches and players said Kelly routinely stayed after competitions to support teammates even after finishing early and that he had an “infectious goal-driven mindset.” The post continued, "He could have left as most of the time he finished first against the competition. It wasn't about him. He stayed to support his team. What a witness to his character!"

Coroner Smith, who is Kelly’s great-uncle, called him "a jam-up golfer" and said, "If he didn't pass, I swear he would've gone pro." School officials extended condolences to Kelly’s family and the wider community. Neighboring school districts also posted messages of support on social media.

Records from the Georgia State Golf Association show Kelly produced two top-10 finishes in 2025 competition. He placed fifth at the Regional Qualifier at Spring Hill on June 30–July 1 and tied for sixth at the Western Georgia Junior Classic on July 28–29 at the Green Island Country Club course. He had also recently competed in the state tournament.

Sudden deaths of young athletes typically prompt medical and forensic review to determine cause, and officials said they are awaiting the results of the autopsy before releasing further information. Dodge County School System officials have not announced funeral arrangements.

The community response included messages from classmates, coaches and local leaders expressing shock and grief. Team statements urged those affected to take Kelly’s example of selflessness into their own lives and offered prayers for his family.

Authorities investigating the circumstances confirmed the incident occurred during sanctioned homecoming-related activity involving students but provided no additional details. The coroner’s office and the school district said they will release more information when it becomes available and asked that the family’s privacy be respected during the pending investigation and autopsy process.
