82-Year-Old Serie A Icon Lamberto Boranga Set for One-Match Comeback with Trevi

Lamberto Boranga, an 82-year-old former Serie A goalkeeper, has been signed by Italian seventh-tier club Trevi for a one-off match in October, the player told the Ansa news agency.

Boranga, who retired from professional football in 1983 after a career that saw him play more than 250 games in Serie A and Serie B in the 1960s and 1970s, said he will play a single match "in October and then we will see." He added he had "no intention of entering the locker room and commanding."

Trevi has enlisted the veteran goalkeeper with a training programme overseen by Marco Bonaiuti, a former Inter Milan goalkeeping coach. Boranga, who has remained active in competitive sport through Masters Athletics, is also scheduled to compete at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Portugal next month.

Beyond his footballing pedigree, Boranga has pursued multiple professional interests. He is a licensed cardiologist and has been described in press reports as a philosopher and a record-setting masters athlete. He has attributed his longevity to a combination of factors, telling reporters he credits a "good diet and sex" among the reasons he remains active.

Boranga represented clubs including Fiorentina and Perugia during his professional career and retired from the professional game in 1983. Since then he has continued to train and compete in age-group athletics, setting records at Masters events that have kept him in the public eye and fit enough to consider a return to competitive football.

The Trevi appearance will be unofficial in the sense that it is a one-match commitment, but the club and Boranga have treated preparations seriously, with Bonaiuti overseeing his goalkeeping training to ensure fitness and safety. Boranga has described the match as an opportunity rather than a bid to resume a professional career.

The move adds to a series of high-profile appearances by elderly athletes who compete in masters categories and occasional exhibition matches. Boranga’s scheduled participation in the European Masters Athletics Championships will see him take part in age-group athletics events in Portugal, continuing a long-running involvement in competitive sport well beyond his professional football years.

Trevi had not immediately responded to requests for comment about Boranga's registration or the precise match he is expected to play. Organisers of the European Masters Athletics Championships confirmed the event will take place in Portugal next month and will include age-category competitions for athletes across Europe.

Boranga’s one-off return will be watched with interest by fans of Italian football and masters sport, and his career remains notable for the intersection of professional sport, medical practice and masters-level athletic achievement.
