Alex Carey mourns his father Gordon Carey as Australia prepares for New Zealand tour
Australian Test cricketer pays tribute after his father’s death from cancer; clubs and fans honor Gordon Carey as Carey joins Australia’s NZ tour

Australian Test cricketer Alex Carey is reeling after the death of his father, Gordon Carey, this week following a long battle with cancer. Carey posted a heartfelt tribute on social media that read: 'Rest in peace Dad, I love you.'
Gordon Carey had been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in 2021. He missed Carey’s Test debut at the Gabba during the 2021 Ashes because of his treatment, but his condition later improved enough to watch Carey play in the second Test in Adelaide. Ahead of Carey’s debut, he spoke about his father’s support, describing him as 'a mate, a coach, and a mentor' who would likely be on the other end of the phone with a message before the game. A photo circulated this week showing Carey and his father sharing a beer in the MCG dressing rooms after a match in the 2023-24 season, underscoring the close bond they shared.
Carey, 31, is a South Australia wicketkeeper and right-handed batsman who has scored 2010 runs from 43 Tests. He has served as an ambassador for the Daffodil Foundation, a cancer charity that funds research and support services. The organization’s work aims to improve cancer treatment outcomes and patient care, aligning with Carey’s public profile as a cricketer who often speaks about family and community support.
Local clubs also paid tribute. Marion Rams Cricket Club described Gordon Carey as a deeply valued member and former assistant coach who was generous with his time and wisdom, noting that his positive impact extended to players, coaches, families, and supporters alike. Reynella Cricket Club, where Carey’s sister Ashleigh plays, also posted condolences, highlighting Gordon’s strong connections with the club and his role in mentoring and guiding players through the years. They expressed a shared sense of loss and offered support to the Carey family as they navigate this difficult time.
Carey was added to Australia’s squad for their Twenty20 tour of New Zealand last week as injury cover for Josh Inglis. Australia are due to fly out to New Zealand ahead of their opening match of the series in Tauranga on October 1. It is understood that Carey will delay his travel but is expected to join the squad at some stage later in the tour, balancing personal grief with a return to international duty.
Carey’s career with Australia has featured 43 Test appearances and more than 2,000 runs, with the SA wicketkeeper continuing to be a key figure for both his state and the national team. The cricketing community has rallied around the Carey family, reflecting on Gordon’s legacy as a mentor, coach, and friend who helped shape a generation of players from his local clubs to the national stage.
