Anders Lee enters Islanders contract year unsigned as camp nears

Anders Lee is entering a contract year with the New York Islanders, with no extension in place as training camp approaches. The captain’s status has been kept out of public discourse, part of the Islanders’ approach to keep noise down while focusing on preparation. The club’s handling echoes last year’s pattern with Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson, whose situations did not become public distractions until the stretch run before they were moved to Colorado and Montreal.

Lee told The Post on Friday that he does not have an extension yet and, barring a major reversal, will go into the season unsigned. "We’ve been on the same page the entire time," Lee said, referring to himself and general manager Mathieu Darche. "He’s had a job to do this summer. He had a lot on his plate when he was introduced. I have a job as a veteran on this team to make myself better and focus on this season. I think we’ve both taken that approach, we’re on the same page with that."

The Islanders have built a culture that limits public contract chatter even as key players approach free agency, a dynamic that has allowed them to navigate busy summers without derailing on-ice progress. GM Mathieu Darche, who took over this summer, has emphasized continuity and leadership as the franchise prepares for another tight race in the Metropolitan Division.

Lee’s extension status remains unresolved ahead of training camp, and while there is no immediate timeline for a decision, the organization intends to keep focusing on development and preparation. If and when negotiations move, they are expected to progress with the same approach the club has shown: stay the course, address contracts when the time is right, and keep the locker room steadied as the season unfolds.
