Andre Onana error hands Fenerbahçe 1-0 win on Trabzonspor debut
Former Manchester United goalkeeper’s loan debut for Trabzonspor ended with a costly mistake that produced the match-winning goal

Andre Onana’s debut for Trabzonspor was marred by a mistake that allowed Youssef En-Nesyri to score the only goal in a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahçe on Sunday, leaving the Cameroon international to watch as his new side slipped to third in the Turkish Super Lig.
After making an initial save, Onana placed the ball at the feet of En-Nesyri, who converted from close range. The strike proved decisive, moving Fenerbahçe into second place in the table above Trabzonspor.
Onana joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Manchester United with the hope of resetting his career following a difficult two-year spell at Old Trafford. United allowed the goalkeeper to move after signing Senne Lammens from Antwerp and following Onana’s loss of the starting spot earlier this season to Altay Bayindir, who took the first three Premier League starts while Onana recovered from a summer hamstring injury.
The error continued a pattern of high-profile mistakes that have dogged Onana since his move from Inter Milan two years ago for a reported £47.2 million. His solitary appearance for United this season came in a Carabao Cup exit on penalties to Grimsby.
Ruben Amorim, speaking about Onana’s departure from United, said the goalkeeper needed a change of environment. “We saw Andre had a very, very good season in Inter,” Amorim said. “The quality is there, but we are in the club sometimes, in the moment, things are getting harder and harder. And you can be really experienced. But in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. Sometimes you need a change. I think we understood that he needed a change. Sometimes it's hard to point why. It's the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, and it was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers. I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players. Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre.”
Trabzonspor manager and club officials have framed the loan as an opportunity for Onana to regain form away from intense scrutiny. The goalkeeper’s early error will likely intensify attention on whether the move can deliver the intended reset.
The defeat leaves Trabzonspor third in the Super Lig after the early rounds of the season, while Fenerbahçe climbed to second on the back of En-Nesyri’s finish. Trabzonspor will look to respond in coming fixtures as Onana seeks to establish himself and avoid further costly lapses.
