Andre Onana shoves fan after Cameroon loss as Manchester United goalkeeper set for loan to Trabzonspor
Cameroon international conceded in World Cup qualifier and was involved in a pitchside confrontation; season-long move to Turkey confirmed by clubs

Andre Onana shoved a spectator after Cameroon’s shock World Cup qualifying defeat by Cape Verde and is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, Manchester United and transfer sources said.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper was widely criticised for his role in Cape Verde’s only goal, scored by Dailon Livramento, before a pitch-side confrontation with a fan who had entered the field at full time. Video and eyewitnesses show Onana appearing to push the supporter after the fan approached him as celebrations continued.
Onana, who has struggled for form and playing time at Manchester United this season, has agreed the temporary move to Trabzonspor, with both clubs said to have completed the necessary paperwork. Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that both clubs had signed the documents and that the goalkeeper had approved the deal.
According to reporting on the move, Manchester United will not receive a loan fee and Trabzonspor will have no option to make the transfer permanent when the loan expires on June 30. The transfer is understood to include a signing-on fee and performance-related bonuses that will increase Onana’s immediate earnings during the loan.
Cameroon’s defeat to Cape Verde came in a top-of-the-group World Cup qualifying match. Livramento’s strike was the decisive moment in a match that saw Cape Verde move to the top of the group. Criticism of Onana focused on his positioning for the goal, with observers saying he remained on his line rather than closing down the angle as the attacker ran in and struck the ball.
The incident with the fan took place after play had ended and supporters entered the field to celebrate. Eyewitnesses said one jubilant supporter approached Onana, reportedly attempting to take a selfie, and that the goalkeeper pushed the fan away. It was not immediately clear whether the incident would prompt disciplinary action by football authorities or by Cameroon’s national federation.
Onana’s move to Trabzonspor follows a period in which his place in Manchester United’s plans diminished under new head coach Ruben Amorim. Club figures have publicly indicated a desire to trim the squad of players deemed surplus to requirements. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast, said the loan was sensible for all parties. "I think [Omar Berrada, who is running the football operations at the club], he's made the point that they're not going to have players sitting around that are not worthy of being at the football club anymore," Ferdinand said, adding clubs should not retain players who are "not the right people to be at the football club."
Onana, who joined Manchester United in 2023, has had intermittent spellings as first-choice keeper and has been criticised at times for errors that cost his side. The loan to Trabzonspor represents an opportunity for regular playing time and a fresh start away from Old Trafford.
Manchester United and Trabzonspor did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the fan incident. Cameroon’s football federation also had not issued a statement on any potential disciplinary measures at the time of publication.
The transfer window and international calendar will determine when Onana links up with his new club, subject to medical checks and the formalities of registration. The loan runs through the end of the 2025–26 season, with Manchester United retaining his registration thereafter.
