Andre Onana to join Trabzonspor on season-long loan from Manchester United

André Onana has agreed to join Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Manchester United, with the Turkish side reportedly offering the goalkeeper increased wages. The move is expected to be finalised when Onana travels to Turkey on Thursday, sources said, ahead of the close of the Turkish transfer window on Friday.

Manchester United will not receive a loan fee and Trabzonspor will have no option to sign Onana permanently when the loan expires on June 30, 2026. Contact between the clubs accelerated after Trabzonspor moved to sell their goalkeeper, Uğurcan Çakır, to Galatasaray, creating an opening that prompted the Turkish club to pursue a short-term replacement.

The 29-year-old Cameroon international’s future at Old Trafford had been uncertain throughout the summer after United recruited Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for a fee reported at £21.7 million on transfer deadline day. Lammens’ arrival pushed Onana further down the pecking order and contributed to the goalkeeper seeking regular playing time elsewhere.

Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan for a reported £47.2 million two years ago. His spell at Old Trafford has been marked by intermittent form and several high-profile errors. He made a solitary appearance this season in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsby Town, a match in which his involvement featured a notable mistake. In the Premier League this term, Altay Bayındır has started the three league games to date.

Onana missed United’s pre-season programme after suffering a hamstring tear on the second day of training in July, an injury that delayed his return to full fitness ahead of the campaign. United had previously quoted AS Monaco a £30 million price for Onana amid links to other goalkeepers, and were also reported to have shown interest in Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez before signing Lammens.

United had at one point been prepared to carry four senior goalkeepers during the season, with Onana expected to be absent for parts of the campaign while representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations over the new year. Onana still has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford; his temporary departure is expected to clear the way for Lammens to stake a claim for the club’s No. 1 shirt, with Bayındır and experienced deputy Tom Heaton providing competition.

Trabzonspor’s move comes as the Turkish club reshapes its goalkeeping department after Çakır’s exit, and the loan offers Onana the prospect of regular first-team football ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The deal will be monitored by United supporters and analysts for its implications on the club’s goalkeeper hierarchy and the long-term standing of Onana at Old Trafford.
