Andre Wisdom: former Liverpool defender says 2020 stabbing 'changed' his career as he plays part-time
Wisdom describes lasting physical and emotional effects of a 2020 attack that saw him stabbed while visiting family; now playing for FC United of Manchester and taking coaching badges

Former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom says a 2020 knife attack in Liverpool altered the course of his career and left him with ongoing pain and nerve damage, though he has continued to play at lower levels and is working on coaching qualifications.
Wisdom, who came through Liverpool's academy and scored on his senior debut in the Europa League in 2012, was attacked by masked men and robbed after leaving a house party in the early hours of 28 June 2020. He said the incident left him stabbed in the thigh, head, buttocks and chest, and that he still experiences physical pain and headaches as a result.
"Who knows where I'd be playing today had I not been stabbed," Wisdom told BBC Sport. "I wouldn't say that night ruined my career, but it definitely changed it." He said he realised only after reaching home from the scene, where he had managed to drive himself, that his thigh wound was severe and required urgent medical attention.
Derby County issued a club statement two days after the attack confirming Wisdom had been the victim of an "unprovoked assault and robbery" and was in stable condition in hospital. He required two operations and, remarkably, returned to play for Derby 69 days later, making an 85th-minute substitute appearance in a League Cup tie on 5 September 2020.

Wisdom had joined Derby from Liverpool in 2017 for a reported fee of £4.5 million. He had been a popular figure at Pride Park, where supporters later raised money for a banner in his honour after the attack. "Andre Wisdom: we are a family, we stick together," the banner read; Wisdom said it moved him.
Despite his return to action, Wisdom said the injury and its aftermath affected his speed, power and overall performance. He told BBC Sport doctors had found "severe nerve damage down my left side" and that he continues to suffer headaches and "dull aches" tied to the wounds. He said he had sometimes retreated inward during recovery and preferred to manage the emotional impact privately.
Wisdom made 40 league and cup appearances for Derby in the season following his return but was released when his contract expired in June 2021 amid the club's financial turmoil and managerial changes. He subsequently had trials with Portsmouth, Birmingham and Sheffield United but did not secure a long-term contract in the EFL.
By September 2023 he had resumed regular football at non-league Warrington Town and later spent a season with Derry City in the League of Ireland. In the summer he joined part-time FC United of Manchester in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the seventh tier of English football. He scored in a 3-1 home win over Whitby Town on 19 August and is part of a squad preparing for an FA Cup second qualifying round tie.

At 32, Wisdom said he has adjusted his ambitions but remains grateful to be playing. "I'm a fan of football, it doesn't matter to me what level I'm playing at," he said. "I'm just grateful I'm still able to play."
Outside playing, Wisdom has invested in property near Liverpool and has rented houses to young Liverpool players. He has started his UEFA B coaching badge at Liverpool's academy in Kirkby and said he appreciates working in an environment where some staff remember him from his playing days.
Wisdom featured for Liverpool in the Premier League and on loan at West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Red Bull Salzburg, and he captained England at under-21 level. He made a total of 48 Premier League appearances across those spells and 22 first-team appearances for Liverpool earlier in his career.
The attackers who stabbed him in 2020 have not been caught. Wisdom said the episode made him more vigilant but he has tried not to dwell on the incident. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said. "Thank God I'm good and that I made it through."
