Former England international Andy Carroll was sent off on his first start for National League South side Dagenham & Redbridge after receiving a red card in the 45th minute of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Bedford Town.

The 36-year-old striker, who joined the east London club in July following a one-year spell at Bordeaux, had been handed the captain's armband for the match but was dismissed just before half-time. Dagenham & Redbridge posted a brief update during the game confirming Carroll had been sent off. The red card marked the third successive match in which the Daggers have been reduced to 10 men.

Carroll made his debut for Dagenham & Redbridge last week, coming on as a substitute during their 5-2 defeat by Worthing after recovering from a hamstring problem. He signed for the club on the same day the team was purchased by a consortium of Qatari private investors; Youseph Al Sharif was named interim chairman and former Daggers captain Anwar Uddin MBE joined as a non-executive director. Reports at the time said Carroll acquired a minority stake as part of his move.

On joining the club, Carroll said he was "really excited to get started with Dagenham" and cited family reasons for the return to London, adding that his children would be able to come and see him play. The striker left Bordeaux after one season and returned to the English non-league scene in July.

Off the field, Carroll has recently addressed speculation about his personal life by posting a photograph with influencer Lou Teasdale on social media. Press reports had suggested the couple had split, but Carroll's post confirmed they were together.

Dagenham & Redbridge will face disciplinary procedures in line with FA regulations following the dismissal. The club did not provide further detail on the nature of the red card immediately after the match, and the FA will determine any suspension after reviewing referee reports.

Carroll's early dismissal adds to a run of disciplinary setbacks for the Daggers, who now head into their next fixtures having played three consecutive matches a man down. The club and player are yet to comment further on the incident.
