Auburn's Bruce Pearl retires amid Senate bid questions; Steven Pearl named successor

Bruce Pearl has abruptly stepped down as Auburn's men's basketball coach, the school said, ending a tenure that began in 2014. The 65-year-old coach leaves with Auburn riding high after a standout season that included a Final Four berth and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Pearl's departure comes as the program looks to chart a new course after more than a decade of sustained success in the Southeastern Conference.

Pearl's resignation comes amid months of speculation that he had been weighing a bid for Alabama's U.S. Senate seat. While he had been coy when asked about the possibility earlier in the year, the latest development ends any immediate plans to return to politics or continue coaching. His son, Steven Pearl, 38, has been reported to have been elevated to Auburn's head coaching role in place of his father, signaling a rapid transition for the Tigers' program.

The Senate seat in question is currently held by former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who led the Tigers' football program to a 85-40 record during his decade in charge. Tuberville announced in May that he would run for governor of Alabama, a bid complicated by questions about residency and the Tommy Tuberville Foundation, which paused activities during a government audit in 2021. Tuberville has said he divides his time between Alabama and Washington, a point that has fueled ongoing discussions about eligibility and commitment to the seat.

Pearl's political leanings have drawn attention in national circles. The report notes that Pearl publicly supported Donald Trump, including backing the president's decision to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities amid tensions between Iran and Israel, and even nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for that action. Those past positions add a layer of complexity to the decision to step away from coaching and toward any future political prospects.

Auburn officials did not immediately announce a formal interim arrangement or a long-term successor, but Steven Pearl's reported elevation signals a carefully managed transition for the program. The elder Pearl had described his tenure as a period of sustained growth for Auburn basketball, and the school now faces the challenge of preserving that momentum under new leadership while maintaining continuity with a family-linked succession that will draw significant attention from fans and rivals alike.
