Bears Cornerback Jaylon Johnson Out Indefinitely After Re-Aggravating Groin Injury

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been ruled out indefinitely after re-aggravating a groin injury in Sunday’s 52-21 loss to the Detroit Lions, a development that further undermines a defense that has struggled to stop opponents through the first two games of the season.

Johnson left the game in the second quarter after diving to break up a pass intended for Amon-Ra St. Brown on third-and-10. It was the latest setback for a player who suffered a significant groin injury in the offseason, an ailment he previously described as a torn abductor off his pelvic bone that kept him out of training camp and preseason action. Team and league officials said it is not yet known whether surgery will be required.

The loss of Johnson, a primary starter in Chicago’s secondary, came as the Bears defense continued to yield large point totals. Through two games the unit is surrendering 39.5 points per game, and Chicago has allowed 73 points across its last 75 minutes of game action. The Bears allowed 38 points after Johnson left Sunday.

Johnson also missed Week 1’s 27-24 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football because of the initial groin issue. With Johnson sidelined and fellow starting cornerback Kyler Gordon still unavailable after missing the first two games with a hamstring injury, the Bears face a thin rotation at cornerback as they attempt to stabilize a unit that has produced few stops.

Chicago entered the season with expectations tempered by a new coaching staff but a healthy secondary. Second-year coach Ben Johnson and general manager additions had fueled optimism that the Bears could contend in a competitive NFC North. Instead, early offensive miscues and defensive breakdowns have left the team 0-2 and searching for answers.

Bears defensive play

The timing of Johnson’s absence is significant for Chicago’s immediate schedule. The Bears are set to host the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, a team that scored 40 points on Sunday, then travel to Las Vegas in Week 4 before a Monday night trip to Washington in Week 5. The forthcoming slate includes offenses that have shown the ability to capitalize on weakened secondaries, compounding the challenge for a Chicago defense already without one of its top cornerbacks.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and the coaching staff will need to adjust personnel and strategy while evaluating the health timeline for Johnson and Gordon. The team has not provided a specific timeframe for recovery, and the decision on potential surgery will likely shape how the Bears manage the position group and defensive game plans in the coming weeks.

The Bears listed as 1.5-point favorites for Week 3, but the absence of a starting cornerback and continuing defensive struggles raise questions about the team’s ability to contain high-powered opponents. The organization faces an early urgency to shore up its defense as it pursues its season objectives.

The Bears have not announced further medical updates or a timetable for Johnson’s return. Club officials said they will monitor his condition and provide additional information as it becomes available.
