Bellinger’s throw, bullpen hold lift Yankees to 3-1 win as questions linger about Aaron Judge’s outfield role

The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 Saturday, highlighted by a go-ahead defensive play and strong work from the bullpen as the clubs continue a pivotal divisional series.

Cody Bellinger threw out Bo Bichette at the plate trying to score the tying run in the sixth inning, preserving a one-run lead and shifting momentum to New York. The throw and tag came on a play the Yankees say they wanted to be in position to make; Bellinger was in right field for the play, while Aaron Judge did not start in right.

New York’s bullpen preserved the lead after the sixth-inning defensive stop. Luke Weaver, Fernando Cruz and David Bednar combined to limit Toronto’s offense the rest of the way, allowing the Yankees to hold on for the victory. The Yankees committed fewer miscues defensively than Toronto in the game, and New York capitalized on its late-inning shutdown pitching to finish 3-1.

The win moved the Yankees to within three games of first-place Toronto in the American League East. It also intensified scrutiny surrounding Judge’s role in right field. The first two games of the series have prompted renewed questions about how much Judge can cover in right field, what defensive contributions he can provide there and how the team will publicly discuss his availability and positioning.

Managerial and roster decisions have already drawn attention this season as the Yankees balance Judge’s offensive production with defensive needs. The club has occasionally adjusted patrols and playing time in the outfield to address those needs; Saturday’s game underscored how critical those choices can be in tight, late-season matchups.

Toronto, which entered the series leading the division, continued to press for runs but was limited by situational pitching and the decisive sixth-inning play. The Blue Jays’ lineup generated baserunners but could not convert enough of them into runs after Bellinger’s throw and the subsequent scoreless innings from New York’s relievers.

The series continues with both clubs still chasing divisional positioning and playoff seeding. Saturday’s result left the Yankees closer in the standings and highlighted ongoing operational questions about how the team will use its core players in the remaining stretch of the regular season.
