Bills rally from 15 points down, stun Ravens 41-40 on walk-off field goal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills rallied from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Baltimore Ravens 41-40 on Sunday night, capped by a 32-yard walk-off field goal by Matt Prater as time expired.

Buffalo outscored Baltimore 22-6 in the fourth quarter, including 16 points in the final 3:56. The comeback was sparked when Ravens running back Derrick Henry fumbled with about 3:10 remaining while Baltimore held a 40-32 lead; Buffalo recovered and turned the turnover into a one-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Allen. The Bills missed the ensuing two-point attempt. After forcing a Baltimore three-and-out, Allen moved the Bills into field-goal range and Prater‘s final kick sealed the victory following a nine-play, 66-yard drive that consumed the final 1:26.

Allen completed 33 of 46 passes for 394 yards with two passing touchdowns and added two rushing scores, finishing with 30 rushing yards. Lamar Jackson, the 2023 MVP, was efficient for Baltimore, going 14 of 19 for 210 yards and two passing touchdowns while rushing for 70 yards and another score. Henry, who led Baltimore's ground game, rushed 18 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

The Ravens dominated the first three quarters, scoring on each of their first five possessions. Baltimore opened scoring with a 52-yard field goal by new kicker Tyler Loop and followed with a string of sustained drives that featured long runs by Henry and big plays from Jackson. Henry accounted for a 30-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and later broke a 46-yard run in the fourth. DeAndre Hopkins, in his first target with the Ravens, hauled in a one-handed 29-yard touchdown, and Zay Flowers was a consistent deep threat, finishing with 143 yards.

Buffalo answered repeatedly. The Bills opened their season with a touchdown drive and stayed within striking distance through the first half with field goals that kept the game close. In the fourth, Allen orchestrated multiple scoring drives. A 32-yard completion to new receiver Josh Palmer moved Buffalo into late-game range, and a 25-yard catch by Keon Coleman set up the final sequence. Buffalo attempted three two-point conversions during the game and failed on each.

Baltimore's offense produced big plays throughout the night, and the Ravens led 40-32 in the closing minutes after a drive that included key runs by Jackson and Henry. The fumble by Henry with the clock ticking shifted momentum, and Buffalo converted the opportunity into a touchdown and ultimately the game-winning field goal.

The loss was costly for Baltimore despite its statistical edge. The Ravens gained big chunks of yardage and produced three scoring drives that appeared to control the game until the late turnover. The Bills, meanwhile, climbed back from multiple deficits behind Allen’s passing and scrambling ability and a resilient finish by the offense.

The victory gave Buffalo a season-opening win and marked one of the most dramatic late comebacks to open an NFL season. Baltimore will seek to correct the late-game breakdowns and turnover issues as the teams head into Week 2 of the regular season.
