Breanna Stewart’s Game 2 status unclear as Liberty eye potential clincher

Breanna Stewart remains questionable for Wednesday’s Game 2 as the New York Liberty pursue a possible series-clinching victory, with testing and imaging after Sunday’s injury failing to rule her out.

The Liberty said Stewart hurt her left knee in Game 1 on Sunday and returned to New York on Monday for further examination. An MRI and other imaging were, in Brondello’s words, "relatively clear," but the team has not made a definitive decision on her availability for the next game.

Coach Sandy Brondello told reporters Monday that he could not predict whether Stewart would play, saying, "Your guess is as good as mine." Brondello added that if Stewart is able to play she will, but that the final decision ultimately rests with Stewart and the medical staff.

The uncertainty comes as New York prepares for a quick turnaround: Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday and could end the first-round series. The Liberty have sought to balance cautious management of Stewart’s knee with the competitive imperative of closing out the series.

The team did not release further medical details or a firm timeline for any return-to-play protocols. Stewart’s status will likely be determined in the hours leading up to the game after additional evaluations and discussions among the player, coaches and medical personnel.

Stewart has been a central figure in the Liberty’s playoff plans; her availability is considered a key factor in New York’s rotation and game plan. The team’s immediate focus is on preparing for Game 2 while monitoring Stewart’s condition and adhering to medical guidance.

The Liberty have avoided giving a firm update beyond the imaging results and Brondello’s comments. With the series poised to be decided on Wednesday, Stewart’s decision will shape New York’s lineup and strategy for a potentially decisive game.
