Bruno Fernandes rebukes critics after Roy Keane and Gary Neville question his captaincy

Bruno Fernandes said outside opinions "will not define" him as Manchester United captain after public criticism from club greats Roy Keane and Gary Neville.

Asked what people most commonly get wrong about him in a BBC interview ahead of the Manchester derby at the Etihad, Fernandes said: "Nothing. People have an opinion about me and I can't change that. It's the way people want to judge you about what they see on the pitch, some of them what they see on television, some of them what they see on interviews. I can't change that. They have the freedom to think the way they want about me, as I have the same freedom to think about them. But what I don't do is I don't judge people until I know them."

Keane and Neville, both former United captains and long-time television pundits, have been outspoken in recent months about Fernandes's leadership and on-field demeanour. Keane described Fernandes and some team-mates as "bluffers" following United's 4-1 loss at Newcastle in April, questioning whether verbal protests and gestures from senior players matched meaningful leadership. Neville has criticised Fernandes's remonstrations with officials and team-mates, calling some of his gesturing "embarrassing" during a 2023 defeat to Liverpool.

Fernandes, United's captain, pointed to his performances on the pitch in defending his role. He was the club's most productive player last season, recording 19 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, and scored United's winner in a 3-2 victory over Burnley shortly before the international break. He reiterated that he will not judge others before getting to know them and stressed that differing opinions are part of life.

United go into the derby with four points from their opening three Premier League fixtures and are seeking to arrest a run of mixed early-season form. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, who host the fixture, have won only once in their opening three league matches and had suffered back-to-back league defeats prior to the upcoming meeting, meaning both clubs face pressure to respond in a high-stakes local rivalry.

The exchange follows a season in which United struggled for consistency, finishing with 14 league defeats last term — a tally Keane pointed to when renewing his critique. Fernandes's role as captain has been examined in that wider context, with pundits and former players debating whether his vocal approach constitutes effective leadership or mere soundbites.

Fernandes has maintained his focus on performance and results rather than pundit reaction. Managerial comments this season have emphasised squad responsibility and collective standards rather than singling out individuals in public. United supporters will look to the derby as a measure of the squad's temperament and the captain's influence in a fixture that carries significant symbolic weight for both clubs.
